During the summer of 2002 the murder rate in Oakland, California began to rise. There were multiple killings each weekend and numerous shootings throughout the week. In order to understand what was being done to stop the escalating violence, the San Francisco Chronicle looked at the issue from many angles including law enforcement and the parole system. A team of law enforcers called P.A.C.T. (police and corrections team) made up of police officers, parole agents, probation officers and federal marshals worked together to locate parole violators. A special Unit of the Oakland Police officers called the Crime Reduction Team worked one of West Oakland's deadliest neighborhoods.

At the beginning of the 2001 baseball season, I was assigned to photograph a manager and his team of Oakland high school players who had been invited to travel to Cuba to play the Cuban All-Star team. I decided to follow the team all the way from their preseason to Havana, Cuba in order to document this historic event.
